3:00 pm
--- I've just woken up, it's the bright early hour of 3 pm, and I'm trying to decide whether "N" comes before "M" or the other way around. I've finished that Pratchett book, best humor I've read in years. Come to think of it, that's the only book I've read for entertainment purposes in the last year or so. This 'being employed' biz has really put a damper on my leisure time activity regiment.

Back to N and M, I'm feeling pretty sure that it's M that comes first, so that indicates that I've collected enough waking sense to start forming an opinion on controversial topics. Speak I of Abortion? Censorship? Dread Heaven's Gate? No. I speak of none other than the amazingly-important-and-vital-to-everyone's-well-being webring, the archipelago.

  Arky what?
---Archipelago. Last time I used that word on paper, I seem to remember it meaning "string of little islands" or something like that. Well, now it means "Webring kind of like open pages, except only the GOOD journals." Well, hmm. Distilling the worthwhile content of the web is a valid and noble undertaking, but in this case, not one I am interested in. Why?

Because the thing I like most about Open Pages is the diversity. They are journals and diaries and logs, and they are alive. When you take something as personal and unplanned as a journal and try to rate it on merit, I think you may be missing the point.

  Utility!
---As for my pages, the hell I care about search engines and web rings. Maybe as a professional, but the only reason my personal page is on the open pages web ring is because one day I was looking at Nate's page (the old one in Hawaii) and I followed a link to Kat's page.

Okay, I think that's enough about the ring stuff. Ed is moving to San Jose next Wednesday. Dave is going to the same place around that time. Steve is in Hawaii. Nate is moving to IS (Internal Support). There are now none of the original Tech Support crew left in tech support here. In fact, Steve, Nate, and I will be the only remaining employees of the old company. It wouldn't take much from GST to get the rest of us to leave. (look! foreshadowing!)

Jason, Hawaii sysadmin, is also making ominous noises. The corporation finally has started wondering why they have such a high turnover rate, and sent out a survey to their employees (and some ex-employees) on Friday. That friday, when I came in to work it was dead silent. As I passed doorways I recognized the staccato clatter of keys usually associated with angry secretaries. EVERYONE was typing PAGES and PAGES of survey response. I finished mine in about half an hour (because that was the deadline) by shortening most of my answers to resemble "Our company sucks, and our customers know it." In fact, someone in the same office wrote that exact line as an answer. So, come Monday we're either all fired or something is going to change.
