  it's not

[Before]So, you've put together your brand new computer with your own two hands. Maybe not COMPLETELY together; you probaby let a bunch of Chinese assembly line workers do a lot of the lower-level manufacturing, operating the solder machines and what not. But the final orchestration of parts into a working thinkbox is up to you! You sweat and you curse, cutting your knuckles on the serrated metal edges inside the case and straining to make parts with loose tolerances fit together, but you finally get it all contained. Then you put the faceplate on your case and you see this:

"What IS that little blank square space (with a hole in it) for? It looks like I should plug something in there. I don't have anything left to plug in, and I don't think any of these plugs would fit there anyway. How annoying. I'm going to be staring at this stupid 1x1 square inch blank space (with a hole in it) for the life of this case."

Well, there's no need to be upset after all! It turns out that the space is for something called a "case badge", which is a little logo encased in clear resin which computer manufacturers stick in the space to make it look as if the case was manufactured by them! I think the little hole is for poking a poker through in case you accidentally stick the badge on upside down or something and you need to get it out of the space. But wait! You're not an officially sanctioned computer manufacturer! How will you get ahold of a case badge to put in your empty space?

Well, I thought of that. So, I went and got a small run of case badges manufactured with the green hexagon-ninja-star-thing logo that I drew for my website, since it looks so snazzy. These fit exactly in a 1x1 inch badge space, and they're even covered in a domed case of clear resin! How cool is that? All you do is peel off the adhesive's backing, carefully line it up with the space you want to stick it in, and then press down. Be careful, the adhesive is seriously sticky (which is why you need a from-the-back hole to poke a stick through to remove it). Then you wind up with something like this:

[After]

What good does it do joe manufacturer for ME to have a bunch of case badges? Well, it turns out I have way more case badges than I do computers. If anyone wants one, they just need to email me a place to mail it, and I'll get one (or two, if you're REAL NICE) out there in a jiffy. For FREE! Then your case can look as good as mine, with all the mystery and hexagonality of the "C" logo. I guess it stands for "Coredump", but really, it could stand for whatever: Cookie, Crunchly, Cartographer, Cryptosporidium... Offer good while supplies last.
