1:23(short):
MONDAY:
Project estimate: 48 man hours
Elapsed: 16 andrew hours
Project status: 100% completeMy lava lamp got second place in that coding competition. Bleh. The winner was very creative in his interpretation of a lava lamp, and his effect does, I think, look more "neat". The comments posted about my entry aren't very original. "Good lighting. Good movement. Good Blobs." Oh. Goooood.
The other thing I was working on in my copious spare time is the Tank Game, which currently has too much fire in it. You shoot a bullet, it trails an enormous streak of fire. If you get hit once you begin burning, a column of flame retracing your path as you desperately try to hit the other square grey tank with a blazing projectile of your own. The fire uses a simple fire algorithm which only has to save one value from each CA cell while calculating.
I go to Hawaii in 4 days. Got my tickets. Got my affairs in order (see Monday's project, above.) Time to contact the people in Hawaii I want to see and see if they're going to stay there for the holidays or what.
Warning: if you have a rumble pak, prepare to be shook! -- Brett, re: Wipeout 64
Feeling dumb again, again. I don't get headaches anymore, I'm used to having to think by now. I managed to catch hold of the lowest rung of the abstract concept ladder and have pulled myself completely free of the ground, up almost to where I can reach the second rung. This step is different; not as painful, but less rested. I can't afford to do nothing for a whole day. (I mean, I guess I could, but then I'd be back at square one.)
And boy, I'm certainly enjoying square two. I think if I apply my current head to familiar old concepts like javascript or 3-D engine, I could make some unique stuff. There's a problem with creating stuff you haven't seen before, it's a little like baking cookies. You stop midway to sample your half-finished wares/z, and you end up just doing that instead of finishing. Good example: Brett has been playing with his half finished golf game for days and days now. Ditto for me and the amazing flaming tank brothers.
The other day at work a bunch of assorted scandinavians came over from Holland. It was very distracting. They all smoke (indoors) like (right next to my cube) crazy, and every time I heard a voice with that accent, I would involuntarily shift focus away from my monitor to try and recognize it.
I have a window at work, but it doesn't open. I do get to watch crows on the rooftops, hiding with their stolen meals. Sometimes it's fun to watch them try and choke down some massive gobbet of organic material. I can also look down upon the nearby office buildings, monitoring the activities of Typing Woman and The Guy Who Is Always Poking Around Inside His Own Nose.
I have to wake up in 4.27 hours, ick.
