My Palm's out of batteries. It has been for some time. I don't normally look at it very often. Mostly, I use the Palm Desktop software
as somewhere to write notes that have some kind of temporal relevance. I'll set an alarm to remind me to do some important-ass thing or other, then I'll
sync the data with what's in the portable metal item (the actual "Palm" thing) and when it's time, the alarm will go off and I'll ignore it and the batteries run dry.
Obviously, my PDA has revolutionized the way that I slack off. Before, I'd just write things on the calendar and then ignore them. It made no noise at all!
Beyond this moment, the day is still filled with activity. I get to eat - probably a couple more times. There might be some burritos or coffee in there somewhere. I'll get out to the
practice space and play some music. I'm trying out some snooty new brand of guitar strings: Thomastik Power Brights. They're made from premium wire (reportedly, Thomastik rejects more wire than it uses) and
inspected by four people before I ever fumble them out of their little paper envelopes. Add to that the fact that the top three strings are plated in brass (giving them an unusual yellow cast) and you've got
the makings of a favorite string. However, what motivates me to be extravagant in this new way is just that I break fuckin strings all the time. The same string. Every practice. Two sets a week. So, if I can find a set of strings that lasts through two practices,
it's worth it to me, even if it costs four times as much. I never even get to have my strings go dead. Oh yeah, so I'll get more of those - the current set has lasted 3 practices. But is my last set. Duhhh, guess I'd better drop by Guitar Center. Another item for the agenda!
I think I've got some kind of knack for this drum programming thing. I should write down infoz as I discover them (or make them up). If I get enough info together, I could make a informational booklet. I could call it, "Drumming out of my ass".
The other day, Kris and I were talking about what it took to start out playing a drumkit. It's tough - if you don't have a kit, you can't really take lessons, as far as I can tell. And if you can't take lessons before you have a kit, that means you have to buy a kit that you have no clue how to play.
No matter what, once you start learning, you have to go through a lengthy period of sucking out loud. I think our neighbors to the south at the practice space are going through this very period. Clunk bunk thunk. Ting. Why was I talking about that? Oh yeah - I thought it would be fun to learn how to drum on actual
drums, and Kris spontaneously brought it up when I picked him up for practice yesterday. Too bad we're not still in high school (no, I don't really mean that), we could just use the school's kit and be really bad in relative seclusion. Learning to play drums may remain in the category of "stuff that it would be cool to do but given the amount of time I would need to invest versus the time I would actually use it, I will probably just talk about it and not do anything" until
something happens that greatly increases the availability of drum kits in the near vicinity (such as Eloïse suddenly giving us permission to use hers. hahahah yeah that's not going to happen.).
